RSPCA

WE ARE ACTIVELY FIGHTING AGAINST ANIMAL CRUELTY IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

It’s incredibly sad and shocking that cruelty to animals is still common in the UK today. The RSPCA now investigate over 150,000 cases of animal cruelty per year, with well over 125,000 animals rescued as a result.

The welfare of the animal should be the responsibility of the owner; therefore we as vets need to provide as much compassion and guidance as possible. Vets take an oath when they qualify, much like doctors, and we state “Above all, my constant endeavour will be to ensure the health and welfare of animals committed to my care.”

We take our oath very seriously but do not believe that we should restrict our care to only those who visit our surgery voluntarily. What about animals with no owners – strays – or an owner who doesn’t care or is actively cruel?

Despite all our work on educating pet owners, some animals just don’t get a good home. Often problems can be resolved with a bit of help and advice, but when things go too far and an animal suffers, then the only way to stop it is for the RSPCA to step in and assist. The RSPCA can only take action if a vet certifies that the animal has suffered. This can involve lengthy reports to the courts, and sometimes court appearances. We feel by assisting the RSPCA, we are contributing to animal welfare.

We have been involved in many successful prosecutions over the years. The goal in these cases is always to stop the suffering of the animal.
